Home Ministry Announces Changes to Border Security Force’s Recruiting Regulations, Ex-Agniveers Given 10% Reservation in BSF General Duty Cadre

Agniveer: On Thursday, the union home ministry announced changes to the border security force’s General Duty Cadre (Non Gazetted) Recruiting Regulations 2015 that included a 10% ex-Agniveers reserve. The ministry lowered the maximum age for former Agniveers in a notification released on March 6 and also excused them from the physical efficiency test.

Ex-Agniveers Granted 10% Reserve in BSF General Duty Cadre

“The upper age limit shall be relaxable up to five years for the candidates of the first batch of ex-Agniveers,” the government notification stated. Ex-Agnives shall be given preference for 10% of the open positions. It will be loosened up to three years for the remaining batch of ex soldiers. The Agnipath initiative, which will replace the military’s ten-year-old system of recruitment, was announced by India on June 14, 2022. It would reduce the age profile of the armed forces, ensure a fitter military, and produce a technically proficient war fighting force capable of addressing future challenges.

Reservation for Ex-Agniveers in India’s First Line of Defense

The Agnipath project only tries to hire soldiers for a four-year term, with a provision to keep 25% of recruits in the regular cadre for 15 years after another round of screening. The government announced on June 18, 2022, that all central armed paramilitary forces (CAPFs), including the Assam Rifles, will grant ex-Agnives who have served four years a 10% reservation. The 25% Agniveers who will remain on staff after another screening process are in addition to this. BSF is the second-largest paramilitary force in the country after the central reserve police force (CRPF). With only about 2,50,000 personnel, the BSF serves as India’s first line of defence along its northern, western, and eastern borders.
