Inauguration of G20 Park in New Delhi: A Fusion of Art and Sustainability

The journey to create the G20 Park's 19 sculptures, each representing the national birds and animals of G20 member nations

Today marks a significant milestone for art and environmental consciousness as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) prepares to inaugurate the G20 Park in Chanakyapuri. This remarkable artistic endeavor perfectly aligns with the theme of the upcoming G20 Summit, which champions the use of waste materials to create captivating art installations. Located on Kautilya Marg, the park promises to be a testament to the power of creativity and sustainability.

A Collaborative Artistic Journey

The journey to create the G20 Park’s 19 sculptures, each representing the national birds and animals of G20 member nations, began in April when a group of talented artists from the Lalit Kala Akademi embarked on this ambitious project in Garhi village. Their dedication and craftsmanship led to the completion of these impressive sculptures by July, as confirmed by an NDMC official. Since then, the park has undergone meticulous landscaping renovations in preparation for its grand opening.

Symbolism of Sustainability

The G20 Park isn’t just an art exhibition; it’s a symbol of unity and environmental consciousness. The theme, “One Earth, One Family, One Future” (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam), conveys the importance of coming together on the path of sustainable development. The sculptures, carefully curated by artists, embody the spirit of sustainability, representing the unique identity of each G20 nation.

Turning Waste into Art

V Nagdas, Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi, emphasized the eco-friendly nature of this project: “The pieces for the G20 park have been conceptualized, designed, and curated by a team of renowned artists who have earlier worked on waste-to-art projects. Each sculpture has been handcrafted and is a testimony to the fact that waste can be turned into wonderful objects.” The artists sourced their materials creatively, repurposing items such as iron bars, auto parts, metal plates, wire mesh, and various other discarded materials from NDMC warehouses.

Educational and Interactive Experience

To enhance visitors’ understanding and engagement, the park incorporates thoughtful selfie points. Each sculpture is accompanied by a plaque providing information about the featured bird or animal, its home nation, the artist responsible for its creation, and other relevant details. This ensures that visitors not only appreciate the artistry but also gain insights into the biodiversity of G20 countries.

A Global Menagerie

The G20 Park proudly showcases a diverse array of sculptures representing national fauna from around the world, including the Bison (USA), Jaguar (Brazil), Red-crowned crane (China), Arabian Camel (Saudi Arabia), Magpie (South Korea), Rooster (France), Redwing (Turkey), Sparrow (Italy), Emu (Australia), Gray Jay (Canada), Brown Bear (Russia), Macaque Monkey (Japan), Rufous Hornero (Argentina), Golden Eagle (Mexico), and Peacock (India).
