India emerged as 1st responder in disaster relief: CDS Gen Chauhan

General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), stated on Tuesday that INDIA has become the first responder in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) at the global level. This was said by General Chauhan in a virtual message delivered at a workshop hosted by the Integrated Defense Staff (IDS) of the Ministry of Defense as part of India’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization chairmanship (SCO).

According to the Defence Ministry, speakers from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Belarus, Mongolia, Pakistan, and China were present, as well as a virtual representative from Russia.

“In keeping with our cultural beliefs of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the whole world is one family — India has been playing an important role in providing HADR in the region and beyond,” General Chauhan said, citing India’s HADR operations in the region and beyond.

Operation Dost

He said that India’s willingness to offer assistance in all possible regions of the world is demonstrated by the prompt commencement of “Operation Dost” in the wake of the recent earthquake in Turkey.

The CDS further stated that a coordinated effort is necessary to lessen the effects of disasters. To this end, India has been hosting multilateral exercises with various nations and multilateral organisations, such as the HADR exercise PANEX 21 for BIMSTEC members in Pune in 2021 and SMANVAY 22 for ASEAN members in Agra in 2022.

“By strengthening multilateral partnerships through engagement via regional mechanisms, improved interoperability, and faster response, we have played our role as the first responder in the region,” General Chauhan said.
