India Is An Important Partner Of Choice For UN – Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

India-UN Relations: Indian humanitarian assistance during pandemic gets round of applause from UN.

Terming India as one of the best partners of choice, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Wednesday that India has increased its impact on the international stage for its ubiquitous approach to assist all in terms of donations of medicines, equipment and vaccines at the height of Covid-19 pandemic across the world.

Addressing the students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (IIT, Bombay), Guterres reiterated that it was India’s medicines, equipment and free vaccines during Covid-19, besides humanitarian assistance and development finance to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka that saved the world from calamitous situations. Guterres was all praise for India’s timely and effective support to the world order and suggested that India can be one of the best partners of choice of the United Nations.

COWIN, India’s Digital platform acknowledged as the largest platform in the world

UN chief, who arrived in Mumbai today, said that the Indian digital platform COWIN is the largest vaccination programme for Covid-19 which has delivered more than 2 billion doses.

He further stated that India was the first country to launch a single-country south-south cooperation support framework via the India-UN development framework partnership.

India stands numero uno in its contribution towards UN Peacekeeping forces

Guterres also spoke about India’s commendable contribution to UN Peacekeeping forces and categorically mentioned in his address that ‘India is also the biggest provider of military and police personnel to UN missions, including the first all-women UN Police contingent to a peacekeeping mission. Over 200000 men and women have served in 49 peacekeeping missions since 1948, a truly remarkable contribution to maintaining peace in the world.

The UN chief, in his statement, said that he was delighted to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. He also congratulated India on its various achievements over the last 75 years as the world’s largest democracy and now the fastest-growing major economy.

Gutterres paid homage to Mumbai 26/11 victims

Earlier, Guterres paid rich tributes to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks perpetrated by Pakistan in Mumbai.

He added, “Terror is absolute evil. There are no reasons, no pretexts, and no grievances that can justify terror acts”. It has no room in today’s world.

UN Chief further added “I feel deeply moved to be here where one of the most barbaric terrorist acts in history took place where 166 people lost their lives. I want to pay tribute to the victims, they are heroes of the world and I want to express my deepest condolences to their families, to their friends, to the people of India, and to all those that are coming from other parts of the world that have lost lives in Mumbai”
