Indian Government Rejects India’s Ranking On Global Hunger Index

The Union government on Saturday said that India’s ranking in the Global Hunger Index 2022 at the 107th position is in constant efforts to tarnish the country’s image as “a nation that does not meet the food security and nutritional needs of its population”. The Center said the index suffers from serious computational system issues and its calculation is flawed.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development said in a statement that in July 2022, the matter was taken up with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that the FIES (Food Insecurity Experience Scale) survey module did not use such estimates based on data.

Because such statistical conclusions are based on merits and demerits.

“However, it was being assured that more work would be done on this issue,” the ministry said. But, despite such factual issues, the publication of the Global Hunger Index report is regrettable.

India’s position has worsened in the 2022 Global Hunger Index and is ranked 107th out of 121 countries, while the ‘child wasting rate’ (underweight for height) among children is 19.3 percent, which is the highest for any country in the world.

“The ongoing effort to tarnish India’s image as a nation that does not meet the food security and nutritional needs of its population is once again visible,” the ministry said.

Sharing of misinformation seems to be a hallmark of the Global Hunger Index

The Center said that out of the four indicators used to calculate the index, three pertain to the health of children and may not represent the entire population.

“The fourth and most important indicator is the estimate of ‘Proportion of Undernourished Population’ (PoU) based on a survey conducted on a very small sample size of 3000,” the government said.

The government said that this report is going to paint a very different picture from the ground reality.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) monitors and calculates hunger at the global, regional and national levels. The hunger level in India is ‘severe’ with a score of 29.1. India was ranked 101 out of 116 countries in 2021, while in 2020 it was ranked 94.
