On social media, a number of party leaders lauded the Congressman. Nehru, who was born in 1889, is still India's longest-serving prime leader. He was elected in the general elections of 1952 and remained on the position until his death in 1964.

Taking to twitter, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote "Pandit Nehru — the maker of modern India. 21st India cannot be imagined without his tremendous contribution. A champion of democracy, his progressive thoughts furthered India's social, political and economic development, despite the challenges. My humble homage to a true patriot.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered him and paid tribute to him. “On his birth anniversary, tributes to our former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji. We also recall his contribution to our nation.”

Congress’ general secretary Jairam Ramesh also tweeted that "(Mo)Distorians will continue to distort, defame and denigrate but Nehru continues to inspire and his relevance has only increased after 2014.”

On Monday, people in ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ will receive 600 copies of The Discovery of India, a classic by Nehru. He said that a volunteer who drove from Delhi to bring the copies did so on very short notice and for a total of 23 hours.
