It is surprising that one village in Mathura doesn’t celebrate it. According to a legend, the reason for the same is a 300-year old curse. According to a popular belief, on the day of Karwa Chauth, a man was accused of cattle theft and beaten to death. His wife had kept the fast of Karwa Chauth for him. Later, the village was cursed by the same enraged wife who jumped onto a pyre and predicted that any lady who kept fast will lose her husband.

Women voluntarily abstain from the festivities out of fear for what the curse may bring upon them. Sapna Singh, an Agra-based primary school teacher who wed in the area, claimed in an interview with a prominent daily that, “I made a lot of preparations for Karwa Chauth. My parents sent lots of things for me for my first festival, but I couldn’t even dress up that day. The people are very strict about the custom and never allow any married women to observe the fast.”

On the lore, the village head said that, “Soon after the woman jumped into the fire, hundreds of men whose wives observed Karwa Chauth died on the same day. Even those who have a regular fast on Friday will not keep it since Karwa Chauth falls on this day.”
