A Hindu temple, BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Mill Park has been vandalized by Khalistani supporters who defaced it with anti-India graffiti and painted “Hindustan Murdabad” i.e. down with India.

Unambiguously denouncing the attack on the temple, BAPS Swaminarayan said it was saddened and disturbed by acts of destruction and hatred. Additionally, it promised to offer prayers for harmony and peace and to follow up with a more detailed statement.
According to reports, graffiti had also praised Jarnail Singh Bhinderwale, who had led separatist movement for Sikh majority state of Khalistan , who was killed by the Army during Operation Bluestar.
As per Liberal MP for the Northern Metropolitan Region, the vandalism during this holy week is extremely upsetting for the Hindu community.
Widespread Condemnation
The Hindu community in Melbourne lodged a formal complaint with the police and MP’s and have also informed that attacks have been going on since last year. Kerala Hindu Association has also condemned the incident. Several indecent messages have also been painted on the walls of the temple.
As Victoria State President of the Hindu Council of Australia, Markand Bhagwat, observed, “Any type of hatred and vandalism against houses of worship is not acceptable and a condemnable act.” There has been considerable condemnation of the incident. He continued by saying that Victoria Police and Premier Dan Andrews pursue offenders with vigour.
The Australian Vishw Hindu Parishad has strongly denounced the targeted attacks.
There has been a rise in such incidents all over the world, in September last year BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Canada was defaced by Canadian Khlistani extremists.
