A car accident claimed the life of Kolkata Police’s first woman officer-in-charge, Debashree Chatterjee and two other officers, her driver and her official guard. Chatterjee was presently posted as CO 12th Battalion.
The accident took place on the Durgapur Expressway on Friday morning. They were travelling in a vehicle which reportedly rammed into a stationary truck loaded with sand. In 2010, Debashree took over as North Port PS as OC. She did appreciable work in the Women Grievance Cell in Kolkata.
The trio was taken to Imambara Hospital in Chinsura, where they were declared brought dead by the attending doctor.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle's driver was allegedly speeding when it hit the truck. Officials of Hooghly district police said the driver may have lost control after dozing off on the wheel.
Chatterjee was returning to Kolkata from Siliguri by road. She started her return journey on Thursday night after visiting an armed battalion unit there. She was a resident Parnashree area in Kolkata`s Behala.
Chatterjee became the first ever lady officer to be posted as officer-in-charge of a police station. During her tenure as Inspector, she served as additional officer-in charge, Hare Street police station and officer-in-charge of North Port and Taratala police stations.
"She had done commendable work to prevent human trafficking and got international recognition," the CM said.
"We have lost an efficient police officer," Banerjee said.
