Lockdown in Maharashtra extended till June 15 to curb COVID surge

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced the extension of the lockdown-like restrictions in the state till June 15 with certain relaxations. The daily coronavirus cases in Maharashtra have declined but these numbers are approx to last year’s peak levels, Thackeray said.

While addressing the state, Thackeray added that people should not to let guards down while preparing for the third wave.

“Even though patient numbers are dropping, we are still at the levels of last year’s peak,” he said.

“There is a difference between the COVID-19 virus variant between last time and this time. It is more virulent now, spreading fast and taking longer for the patient to recover,” he warned the people.

“We also have another devil to deal with: black fungus. We have 3,000 cases of mucormycosis in the state. The coronavirus task force is keeping track,” he said.

Maharashtra reported around 18,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours which is the lowest in the last 2 months.
