Lok Sabha Chaos! BJP Demands Apology from Rahul Gandhi for Remarks on India’s Democracy in UK

Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi: The controversy surrounding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in Britain calling for US and European nations’ intervention about the “disappearing” of democracy in India caused the Lok Sabha to be halted for a second day in a row on Tuesday. During the televised debate, the audience was divided into two groups: those who supported the motion and those who opposed it. The latter group was headed by the televised debaters.

Congress Leader’s Remarks in Britain

BJP members shouted from their seats, “Rahul Gandhi maafi mango (Rahul Gandhi apologise),” again. Several ministers were also standing. Members of the oppoMsition chanted slogans from the aisles rather than entering the house’s well. The acronym BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was referenced on one sign as “BRICS ke ‘I’ ludak raha hai” (The ‘I’ in BRICS is tottering).

Divided Audience, Supporters and Opposers

Another poster, carried by a Congress member, quoted the Prime Minister’s speech from Seoul in May 2015: “Pata nahi pehle janam main kya paap kiya tha, Hindustan main paida hua (Don’t know what sin I had committed that I was born in India)”. In an attempt to resume Question Time, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla pleaded with the audience to respect the chamber’s honour.

Government Demands Apology

Congress members persisted in their protest, though, and the speaker then decided to adjourn the chamber until two o’clock. Gandhi recently claimed in London that there is an all-out assault on the nation’s institutions and that the foundations of Indian democracy are being attacked brutally. Gandhi was called upon to apologise for his comments, with the BJP in power alleging that Gandhi had attempted to disparage India.
