Lucknow News: With the help of massive investments, Uttar Pradesh is aiming high in the defence industry. The state has started down the path of becoming a significant defence manufacturing base in India, driven by the Make in India initiative. Now, Lucknow will also produce the indigenous BrahMos missile, and the production facility has been located in the Sarojininagar neighbourhood of the city. The Centre has announced the establishment of two defence industrial corridors, one in Uttar Pradesh and the other in Tamil Nadu, in order to attain self-reliance in the aerospace and defence industries.
Transforming Lucknow into the BrahMos Missile Hub
Rajnath Singh, the defence minister and a local legislator from Lucknow, deserves praise for bringing the BrahMos missile production facility to the city. Beginning in 2024, the BrahMos facility will produce 80 to 100 missiles annually. Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister, summarised it with a shout, “Ab Lucknow muskaraega bhi aur dahaadega bhi’ (Lucknow will now smile as well as roar).” According to Atul D Rane, CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace, said, “The construction work of the unit is in full swing at Lucknow site which is spread over 200 acres. Production of the current version of BrahMos will start once the facility is set up.The first BrahMos of the current version can be rolled out by mid-2024.” The BrahMos-NG family of missiles will be introduced over the course of 5-7 years. The nation’s missile industry consortium will gain strength from the manufacturing hub, which will also aid in developing a national and state-level ecosystem for cutting-edge weapons and technologies. From the 200-acre plant in Lucknow, BrahMos Aerospace intends to deliver 80–100 missiles annually. Rane stated that “numbers are highly dependent on the orders we receive.”
Job Opportunities and Economic Impact of the BrahMos Project
From submarines, ships, aircraft, or even from the ground, BrahMos-NG can be launched. It is being developed for deployment on a greater variety of contemporary military systems because it is lighter, smaller, and has more intelligent dimensions. Over the following few years, it will increase the combat readiness and adaptability of the Indian army. 500 engineers and technicians will have direct employment as a result of the project. 5,000 additional people will receive indirect work as well. About 10,000 people will gain work as a result of the formation of ancillary defense-related units. The third-largest economy in the nation and the fourth-largest state are both Uttar Pradesh. UP, one of the top five manufacturing states with a population of more than 22 crore, has the most labourers available. In terms of MSME units, it is also ranked top nationwide. The announcement of about Rs 3,700 crore in investments in the military industry at an event held in Aligarh in August 2018 gave the Uttar Pradesh military Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) a promising start.
Satellite Manufacturing and Space Research Initiatives
In addition to the BrahMos missiles, satellites will also be produced in UP. Ananth Technologies Limited (ATL), a satellite manufacturer based in Hyderabad that offers hardware and software services, is anticipated to invest Rs 3,000 crore in the region. The government will also establish a research and development support base at IIT-Kanpur to aid the space industry. The Golden Quadrilateral, which connects Delhi to Kolkata via motorways, runs through six nodes—Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra, Aligarh, and Chitrakoot—covering the central, eastern, and western portions of the state. According to Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, UP is fully capable of reaching any height. “Uttar Pradesh, formerly seen to be a barrier to the nation’s economic expansion, is now its growth engine. In addition to producing BrahMos, it will also serve as a centre for satellite development, according to Rajnath.
