Mangaluru auto blast “act of terror,” says Karnataka DGP

Mangaluru auto blast:  The blast in an autorickshaw in coastal Karnataka’s Mangaluru on Saturday was not accidental but an “act of terror with the intention to cause serious damage”, said the state police chief on Sunday. Karnataka top cop Praveen Sood added that the police was probing the incident along with central agencies.

Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra too said that central investigation teams were assisting the police in the case.

Police collecting evidence

“The person injured in the blast is not in a position to speak yet. The police team is collecting all the information. Early indications into the probe suggest terrorist activity. We have informed the central security agencies, and they have sent a team to Mangaluru. We are expecting concrete information in the next one or two days,” he said.

The police have recovered a “burnt pressure cooker with batteries” inside the autorickshaw.

Two injured in blast

Two people – the autorickshaw driver and a passenger – were injured when the vehicle exploded near a building where construction work is going on.

After the blast, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai visited the city and ADGP (Law and Order) Alok Kumar ordered a high-level probe. “The investigation is conducted in all dimensions. The senior officers in Mangaluru city will monitor the probe,” he stated.

A team of National Intelligence Agency (NIA) was expected to visit the place and take up investigation. Police said the passenger was issuing confusing statements to the police and his role was suspected. police had gathered the ID card of the passenger identified as Premraj Kanogi. His half body was burnt in the blast.

Mangaluru Police Commissioner Shashikumar stated that the fire was noticed after a passenger boarded the auto.
