Odisha CM Patnaik hits out at BJP’s ‘double engine’ slogan, says good governance matters

Naveen Patnaik, chief minister of Odisha and president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), stated on Saturday that solid governance, not a “double engine” government, is what may assist a party win elections rather than the BJP, which lost the Karnataka Assembly election.

Patnaik made the remark at the BJD party’s celebration of its candidate’s victory in the Jharsuguda by-election on Saturday. Patnaik is the party’s leader.

Patnaik remarked without mentioning any specific parties, “Single engine or double engine does not matter. From people’s point of view, governance is important. Good governance and pro-people governance always win.” BJP had made ‘double engine’ (BJP government at the state and the Centre) its slogan in Karnataka.

Politically significant is Patnaik’s subtly expressed disapproval of the “double engine” administration, as the opposition BJP has long promised the people of Odisha rapid growth in exchange for their support.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah both made statements in favour of it in the state in the past.

Patnaik’s remark about the BJP slogan, which wins all Assembly elections, was made after a protracted silence. He seems to have used the opportunity presented by the saffron party’s crushing in Karnataka to speak out against it.
