Opposition unites to boycott New Parliament Building, denounce PM Modi’s plans

PM Modi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) decided not to attend the impending inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament on May 28 just hours after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) made the same choice. Sanjay Singh, a member of the AAP’s Rajya Sabha, said on Twitter that the party would not attend the inauguration ceremony in response to Prime Minister Modi’s decision to not invite the president.

TMC Leader Derek O’Brien Announces Party’s Decision to Skip New Parliament’s Opening

TMC leader and Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien already said that the party would skip the new Parliament’s opening. Derek went so far as to criticise Narendra Modi, claiming that the prime minister’s speech at the opening of Parliament was “all about I, me, myself.”

CPI General Secretary D Raja Announces Party’s Decision to Skip Parliament’s Opening

Even the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), D Raja, declared that none of his party’s leaders would be present. As of right now, neither Congress nor any of its leaders have made a formal declaration that the grand old party will skip the ceremony. However, according to party sources, Congress is most likely to miss the inaugural ceremony.

Joint Statement Announces Coordinated Boycott of Parliament’s Opening

The leaders of like-minded opposition parties debated the matter and issued a joint statement announcing a coordinated boycott. Opposition parties have asked that President Droupadi Murmu inaugurate the new structure. On May 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially open the new, multibillion dollar Parliament building, drawing harsh condemnation from the opposition parties. In the four-story structure will be more than 1,200 MPs. Following Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla’s request, PM Modi will officially open the new Parliament building on May 28.

Calls for Head of Legislature to Conduct Ceremony

This attracted criticism from opposition leaders, and additional parties joined the chorus of protests, saying that the inauguration should be conducted by the head of the legislature rather than the head of the government. A huge constitution hall showcasing India’s democratic legacy will be included in the new Parliament building, which is being built by Tata Projects Ltd. Other features include a library, many committee rooms, dining places and a lot of parking. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha marshals will have new dress codes in the next parliament.
