According to officials, a well public think tank Centre for Policy Research (CPR) has had its FCRA licence suspended by the Ministry of Home Affairs because of legal violations.
Following Income Tax surveys on it and Oxfam India in September of last year, the CPR was under scrutiny. According to the officials, CPR's licence under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) has been suspended due to legal violations.
Following the revocation of Oxfam's FCRA licence in January of last year, the NGO filed a revision appeal to the home ministry. The FCRA's suspension of CPR's licence will prevent it from receiving any money from abroad.
The World Resources Institute, Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation were among the donors to CPR, according to the officials.
The Department of Science and Technology has recognised CPR as a recognised institution. CPR is a nonprofit organisation that also receives funding from the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR).
According to officials, the think tank has been asked to provide documents and clarity regarding FCRA monies it has received.
CPR's FCRA licence was last renewed in 2016, and the next renewal was planned for 2021.
CPR has been one among India's top public policy think tanks since 1973, according to the organization's website.
According to the CPR site, it is a non-profit, non-partisan, independent group dedicated to conducting research that advances better scholarship, better public policy, and a lively public discussion of the issues that affect people's daily lives in India.
According to the website, it brings together some of India's top policy practitioners and thinkers who are at the forefront of both research and engagement in the policy space. They come from a variety of fields of study and professional backgrounds.
According to CPR, advanced and in-depth research is carried out on a variety of policy-relevant topics with an emphasis on India's challenges in the twenty-first century.
According to the non-profits's website CPR collaborates closely with policymakers through its research and policymaking engagements in order to put India firmly on the path to creating a policy ecosystem suited for the twenty-first century.
