BRICS Summit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the other BRICS leaders arrived at the Sandton Convention Centre to take part in the plenary sessions. The leaders posed for a BRICS family picture before the talks. Significantly, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping were photographed holding hands while standing apart from one another. Along with PM Modi, Presidents Jinping and Ramaphosa, the BRICS group photo also included Brazil President Lula da Silva and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

PM Modi’s Grand Arrival and Ambitious Vision

On Tuesday, PM Modi landed in South Africa and was welcomed ceremoniously at Waterkloof Air Force Base. PM Modi was greeted with a stirring rendition of “Vande Mataram” by the Indian diaspora as he arrived. Outside the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg, the Indian community members welcomed PM Modi as he arrived to raucous drumbeats. The 15th BRICS Summit’s first day in Johannesburg saw the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue. In his speech at the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue, PM Modi predicted that India’s economy will soon reach $5 trillion and serve as the world’s primary driver of growth in the years to come.

PM Modi’s Emphasis on Mutual Trust and Openness at BRICS Summit

Mutual trust and openness, in particular in the Global South, can help have a significant impact, according to PM Modi’s special message to the conversation. The world economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are together known as BRICS. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the BRICS Summit has been held virtually for the past three years. This is the first in-person summit in that time.
