PM Modi congratulates Justin Trudeau for election win, says looking ‘forward to work’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau for his victory in the recently contested polls and said he looks forward to further strengthen India-Canda relations.

“Congratulations Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on your victory in the elections! I look forward to continuing working with you to further strengthen India-Canada relations, as well as our cooperation on global and multilateral issues,” tweeted Prime Minister Modi.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday dialled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to send him best wishes on his Liberal Party’s election win, the White House said in a statement.

The two leaders “underscored the strong and deep friendship between the United States and Canada,” the statement said, adding, they also discussed “their shared commitment to strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of their economies and coordinating their pandemic response.”

A statement from Trudeau’s office said the two North American leaders “reiterated the importance of the mutually beneficial Canada-US partnership for the security and prosperity of both countries” and “committed to getting together in person soon” to discuss bilateral cooperation.

The US President and Canadian Prime Minister also “discussed China’s arbitrary detention of Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig,” the statement added.

After a bumpy five weeks of campaigning, the Canadian prime minister speaking to the general public said that brighter days are ahead.
