During his official visit to Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and stability under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. His counterpart, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, expressed gratitude to the Indian government for its timely and significant assistance during the island nation’s economic crisis.
PM Modi: India Stands With Sri Lanka
Addressing a joint press meet, PM Modi emphasized India’s proactive role in helping Sri Lanka navigate its financial challenges. "India is committed to the peace, stability, and prosperity of the region. In line with our Neighbourhood First policy, we have extended full support to Sri Lanka’s journey of economic revival," PM Modi said.
He highlighted India's continued cooperation in key sectors like infrastructure, energy, digital connectivity, and healthcare. Modi also noted that India had extended essential lines of credit, currency support, and humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka at a time of unprecedented crisis in 2022 and 2023.
"India has always stood by Sri Lanka in difficult times, and we will continue to partner with the people of Sri Lanka as they move forward," the Prime Minister added.
President Dissanayake: India’s Support Instrumental
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his remarks, credited India as a key partner in the country's path to economic stabilization. "I thanked Prime Minister Modi and the Government of India for the valuable support extended to Sri Lanka towards our economic recovery, growth and stability," he said.
He further emphasized that India's Neighbourhood First policy is more than diplomatic language—it's a demonstrated commitment. "PM Narendra Modi expresses India’s full commitment and support to the economic recovery process of Sri Lanka," Dissanayake noted.
The Sri Lankan President also informed PM Modi about the island’s progress on debt restructuring and ongoing recovery strategies. “We are on a path of stabilization, and India’s role has been significant,” he said.

Both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, investments, and tourism. Talks also included regional security, maritime cooperation, and joint infrastructure projects under the Bay of Bengal Initiative.
