President Murmu praises CJI Chandrachud for his speech in Hindi

President Draupadi Murmu: The President of India Draupadi Murmu has praised Justice DY Chandrachud for speaking in Hindi during the inauguration of the new Jharkhand High Court building. In her speech, she hoped that the judiciary will take several more steps to make justice more accessible to all sections of the society.

President Murmu also wished that more judges will follow the CJI and speak in Hindi and other Indian languages. While addressing the august gathering, the President drew the CJI’s attention to thousands of undertrials lodged in prisons. These jail inmates aren’t released in time even after securing favourable verdicts.
Another issue that the President focused on was the litigants. Very often, these people don’t get justice in the truest term. She appealed to the judiciary to frame rules, if there aren’t any, so that litigants go home satisfied.

An activist CJI

Within months of taking over as the CJI of the Supreme Court, Justice DY Chandrachud has projected himself as an activist judge. He has supported same-sex marriages, batted for personal liberties and has also stood solidly behind the collegium system of judicial appointments.
At the same time, Justice Chandrachud has ensured there are amicable relations between the Judiciary and the Executive. He is also improving the justice delivery system right at the trial court level. At the time of writing, the Supreme Court was thinking about using AI systems for transcribing court judgments.

What is collegium?

Since the 1990s, the Supreme Court has a collegium which recommends the appointments of judges to High Courts and the apex court. This collegium consists of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the next senior-most judges of that court. The collegium’s recommendations are later sent to the Central Government for making a final decision.
