Ron DeSantis to run for 2024 Presidential elections

Ron DeSantis: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will run for the White House in 2024, per his Twitter announcement on May 24. DeSantis declared his intentions in a Twitter chat with Elon Musk on Wednesday. However, DeSantis’ Twitter announcement was ridden with several glitches – Musk said that servers had crashed because so many people were trying to hear the Florida Governor.

Can DeSantis win?

DeSantis has been the Florida Governor twice, and this makes him a strong contender against Donald Trump. Over the past few years, Republicans under Trump have been losing several key national elections. Some people in the Grand Old Party see the Florida Republican Governor reversing this trend.
DeSantis is 44, nearly the same age as Obama and Clinton when they became presidents. On the other hand, Trump is 76. According to government statistics, the median age of American voters is between 39 and 46. This implies that many Republican voters may vote for DeSantis.
However, DeSantis doesn’t have as many deep and wide relationships across the GOP as Trump and this may impede the latter’s chances to win the Republican nomination.
Second, DeSantis can’t think quickly and can’t handle impromptu press conferences. On the other hand, Trump knows which queries to duck and which ones to handle.
De Santis also faces a significant challenge from Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina. Scott is black and banks on support from several wealthy Americans.

Trump’s woes

Though there are other rivals in the race like Nikky Haley and Tim Scott, the stiffest challenge to DeSantis will come from Donald Trump. However, of late, the ex-President has been busy fighting several lawsuits, ranging from sexual abuse to corruption. Early May, he was convicted of sexually abusing a newspaper columnist in 1996 and ordered to pay a fine of $5 million. Trump has appealed against this conviction.
