Its was a terrible accident on Sunday, June 15, 2025, shortly after 3:30 PM. An iron pedestrian bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed next to Kundamala village in the Pune district. There were many spectators within distance, as this was an iconic tourist/pilgrimage area.

What Happened?

Eyewitness reports indicate that there were approximately 50-100 people on the bridge when it folded, and reports indicated that there had been renovations on the bridge in the past hints of bridge remaining open. The failure of the bridge during rainy season was unexpected and raises questions when considering the integrity of the bridge and whether or not inspections were appropriate.

Casualties and Rescue Operations

Rescue operations began within moments after the collapse of the bridge, with responders rapidly arriving from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, and local police with firefighters and local municipal responders.

  • Confirmed dead: At least 2 people have died.
  • Injured: 32 people have been injured several with critical injuries.
  • Swept away: Over 20 people are assumed missing or swept away by the fast-moving river.

Up until now, 38 people have been rescued and taken to local hospitals. Search operations continue hour by hour, year by year as divers, boats, and cranes are deployed to recover any missing persons.

Official Reactions

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the alarming news and stated that there is an official inquiry into why the collapse happened. He said that every effort will be made to find any negligence.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde likewise visited the location and said that, while they have rescued 38 people, they will pursue heavy sanctions against the perpetrators if there is any evidence of lapses in maintenance or construction standards.

Locals Raised Alarms Earlier

It was reported that local villagers had raised concerns about the bridge's conditions numerous times in the past. While the bridge had been renewed four years ago, many felt that the bridge conditions were not meant to sustain the increasing amount of visitors.

The tragically fallen Indrayani Bridge demonstrates the risks that can arise from aging and failing infrastructure, especially in the monsoon. While recovery is still on-going and the authorities investigate the cause of its collapse, the discussion is already starting to develop around safety standards for infrastructure safety at public tourist sites.
