Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the first Indian prime minister to visit the nation since its independence in 1991, made history today by arriving in the war-torn nation of Ukraine. About six weeks have passed since Modi’s controversial trip to Moscow, which drew ire from the US and certain Western allies. Later today, he will have a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, to talk about finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine.
PM Modi’s Arrival and Delegation
‘Rail Force One’ brought PM Modi to Kyiv from Poland; the trip took him almost ten hours. This completes the second and last part of his two-country journey. S. Jaishankar, the foreign minister, and Ajit Doval, the national security adviser, are with him. With an eye towards reaching a negotiated resolution to the dispute, PM Modi will speak with President Zelenskyy one-on-one as well as through delegation.
Indian Students in Ukraine Express Excitement
Indian students residing in Ukraine have shown excitement about PM Modi’s visit. One student, speaking to ANI News, shared, “We are thrilled about PM Modi’s arrival here. The Indian government has been supporting Indian students since the time of Operation Ganga.” Another student added, “We are very excited to meet PM Modi. This visit gives us a chance to see him and possibly talk to him.”
Focus on Peaceful Resolution
Before departing Delhi, Modi expressed his anticipation of discussing and building upon previous conversations with President Zelenskyy. He aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
India’s Neutral Stance and Multi-Alignment Policy
India has remained neutral in the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, supporting diplomatic efforts and dialogue as a way to end conflict. With a “multi-alignment” strategy, the Indian government is interacting with both Russia and Ukraine on its own. This strategy tackles the intricacies of the present geopolitical environment while reflecting India’s commitment to non-alignment.
