Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi has raised serious concerns over alleged irregularities in Maharashtra’s recent Assembly elections. Addressing a press conference at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, alongside Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, he accused electoral officials of manipulating the voter list.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that a significant number of voters were either added or removed without transparency, disproportionately affecting Dalit, tribal and minority communities. He further questioned why the Election Commission (EC) had not responded to repeated requests for clarity on these anomalies.

Rahul Gandhi Questions Sudden Surge in Maharashtra’s Voter List

Rahul Gandhi pointed out an unusual increase in voter registrations just before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, raising concerns over its legitimacy.

He stated, "We represent on this table - the entire opposition that fought the last election in Maharashtra. We have studied the details of the voters and the voting list. Our teams have been working, and we have found many irregularities."

Highlighting the numbers, he further revealed that, 32 lakh voters were added between the 2019 Vidhan Sabha elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

39 lakh voters—equivalent to the entire voter population of Himachal Pradesh—were added between the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2024 Vidhan Sabha elections, within just five months.

He questioned how such a large number of new voters could appear within such a short period, demanding an explanation from the Election Commission.

Rahul Gandhi Demands Transparency from the Election Commission

Rahul Gandhi criticised the Election Commission for its lack of response to opposition queries. He stated:

"We have been saying to the Election Commission that we are finding anomalies. We need the voter list – names and addresses of Maharashtra’s voters. We need the voter lists of both Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections because we want to understand exactly who these new additions are. There are many, many, many voters that have been deleted. Voters who were in one booth have been transferred to another booth."

According to him, most of these deleted voters belonged to marginalised communities. He added, "We have made repeated requests to the Election Commission. They have not answered us. The only reason they would not respond is if something is wrong with what they have done."

Rahul Gandhi also raised concerns about the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), questioning its transparency.
