Rahul Gandhi Jumps in Farmer Protest, Says ‘Legal Guarantee of MSP For Farmers;’ Check Details

In a momentous move, Congressman Rahul Gandhi declares that his organisation will formally ensure that every farmer receives the Minimum Support Price (MSP), in accordance with the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.

Rahul Gandhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced on Tuesday that the party has chosen to legally guarantee the minimum support price (MSP) to “every farmer” as farmers from more than 200 unions continue to march towards Delhi in an effort to pressure the Centre to fulfil their demands.

Congress Announces Historic Decision

“Farmer brothers, today is a historic day! Congress has decided to give a legal guarantee of MSP to every farmer on crops as per Swaminathan Commission,” he said in a post on X. The government should set the MSP at least 50% higher than the weighted average cost of production, according to the Swaminathan Commission Report. This method is sometimes referred to as the C2 + 50% formula.

In addition to the direct production costs (also known as C2), the C2 + 50% calculation additionally accounts for the imputed cost of capital and land rent. Following unsuccessful negotiations with the Centre, a number of farmer associations began their march towards Delhi on Tuesday. A legislative guarantee for MSP is what the farmers are most demanding.

Land Acquisition Act 2013

The farmers are also calling for the following: the reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, withdrawal from the World Trade Organisation, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, waivers of farm debt, police cases being dropped, “justice” for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, and compensation for the families of farmers who lost their lives during the previous agitation, among other things.
