Baba Ramdev: Yoga master Ramdev became the focus of controversy after appearing to disparage Other Backward Classes (OBC) in a widely shared video. But Ramdev came forward to say that he didn’t mean to offend the OBC community; rather, he was addressing AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi with his remarks.
Social Media Erupts Over Video Implying Ramdev’s Denigration of OBC
Social media users were incensed by the video, which went viral because it implied that Ramdev had denigrated the OBC community by claiming his Brahmin identity. In response to questions from the media, Ramdev emphasised that his remarks had been misunderstood and misheard. “I said ‘Owaisi’ and not ‘OBC.’ His (Owaisi’s) predecessors were anti-nationals. I don’t take him seriously,” Ramdev said.
Ramdev Allegedly Declares Brahmin Identity and Gotras
The video purports to show Ramdev declaring his Brahmin status and mentioning several Brahmin gotras, including “Agnihotri Brahmin,” though NDTV was unable to independently verify it.
The yoga guru explained, “My original gotra is Brahma gotra. I am an Agnihotri Brahman. People say babaji is OBC…I am a Vedi Brahmin, Dwivedi Brahmin, Trivedi Brahmin, Chaturvedi Brahmin – I have read four Vedas.” Many used the hashtag “#boycottpatanjali” to protest after the video went viral, and they also criticised Ramdev for allegedly insulting the backward group.
