Saudi Arabia Bus Accident: Tragic! 42 Indian Pilgrims Dead — Indian Consulate Sets Up 24×7 Support Desk in Jeddah

Saudi Arabia Bus Accident: A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded for Indian nationals in Saudi Arabia when a bus transporting 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker, reportedly around Mufrihat, between Badr and Medina, early Monday morning. The accident has resulted in dozens of fatalities, which has prompted the Indian government to work on support for the families of victims.

Indian authorities mobilise

The Indian Consulate General in Jeddah has established a control room that operates 24 hours a day in response to the accident in response. The Consulate General has set up a dedicated helpline number — 8002440003 — and has been working closely with Saudi authorities in establishing inquiries regarding the injured, to facilitate the repatriation of bodies, and to make consular support available to the families of victims. 

Government Response 

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted the incident with a sense of deep sorrow. Jaishankar confirmed that the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, the Indian Consulate in Jeddah are “providing fullest support” to the affected families. 

Jaishankar further expressed condolences and hopes for a speedy recovery of any survivors. 

Details and Casualty Report

Initial assessments indicate that the 42 pilgrims involved in the accident were from Hyderabad, Telangana, and included women and children.

 There are indications that most of the passengers were asleep when the crash occurred, which would have been disastrous.

 Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has confirmed the high casualty rate and has called upon the central government to return the deceased and arrange medical treatment for the injured individually.

Political and Local Response

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has expressed his shock and directed state officials to make contact with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.

 Owaisi strongly called for immediate repatriation, stating that he expects the complete involvement of the government to bring the deceased home.

  • The control room in Jeddah will continue with updates and will support coordination efforts to provide updates to families. 
  • Indian diplomatic staff are working with Saudi authorities to identify the deceased and arrange for the return of remains. 
  • Medical teams are being assembled for the injured, and consular staff are assisting with documentation and legal formalities. 
  • The Indian government may also consider long-term support for bereaved families.
