SC allowed MMRCL to seek permission to cut 84 trees for a metro shed

Supreme-court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday did not agree with the contention of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) that the metro would encourage citizens not to use cars. Along with this, the court said that this is not the right ‘conclusion’ and making cars ‘expensive’ like Singapore can be effective in this regard.

According to media reports, buying a car in Singapore is a costly affair and the potential buyer has to bid and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE).

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha allowed MMRCL to proceed with its plea with the concerned authority for felling 84 trees in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony for its ‘car shed’. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of MMRCL, while mentioning the benefits and impact of the Metro Rail Project, said that there will be a reduction in carbon emissions due to less vehicular traffic.

More than 13 lakh commuters can travel by metro and this can reduce the number of cars, fuel consumption and air pollution, he said, adding that nine people die in train accidents in Mumbai every day. The Chief Justice said, ‘The rate of growth of cars will continue to increase. People will keep the car. See what happened in Delhi… The conclusion that people will stop driving will reduce fuel consumption? This will not help. The downside is when you do something like Singapore – ‘by making cars very expensive’.’
