SC refuses to rename Bombay High Court

On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected the plea for seeking direction to rename the Bombay High Court to Maharashtra High Court.

The plea submitted by a former judge was dismissed by a court of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Vikram Nath.

“These are issues for lawmakers to decide. What fundamental right is prejudiced for you to bring it here?”, the bench said.

A directive to the authorities to take effective steps to implement a provision of the Maharashtra Adaptation of Laws (State and Concurrent Subjects) Order, 1960 for the conservation and preservation of the unique culture, heritage, and traditions of the people of Maharashtra is also requested in the petition filed by Thane-based V P Patil, who served as a judge for 26 years.

According to Patil, the relevant authorities in other states should be instructed to rename their high courts to reflect the names of the states in which they are located.

The statement that “Maharashtra” has a unique meaning in a Maharashtrian’s life was made, and it was stated that the high court’s name must reflect this.
