12-year-old Sanjay Gowda was a student of class 7th. His parents Nagraj and Bhagyalakshmi run a tea shop in the town itself. The accident happened between 6.45-7.45 pm on Sunday. Initial police investigation has revealed that Sanjay was rehearsing for the role of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh when the accident happened. Sanjay’s parents were at the shop at the time of the incident. Sanjay was alone in the house. He started rehearsing by locking the house from inside. He was rehearsing for the scene in which Bhagat Singh was hanged by the British. It is feared that due to deteriorating balance, the noose of hanging would have been tightened in the neck. Sanjay also wore a black hood. He had put the other end of the rope around his neck. Unfortunately the noose was tightened.

The incident came to light when Bhagyalakshmi returned home and saw that Sanjay was not opening the door. When they broke the door with the help of neighbors, they found Sanjay hanging from the fan. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. Chitradurga Extension Police has registered a case of unnatural death. “Prima facie it appears that Sanjay died accidentally during the rehearsals,” an official said.

Kotturesh KT, principal of Sanjay’s school said, “Sanjay Gowda was a bright student. He used to come first in class and extra-curricular activities. The whole school is in mourning over his death. As we were going to present the program on Rajyotsava day, we requested his parents to inform the concerned class teachers about the interest of their children in participating in the cultural programmes. It was related to Kannada and culture, but Bhagat Singh’s theme was not a part of it.”
