Several killed in Bengal post-poll violence

The West Bengal BJP leadership on Monday alleged that party supporters were being targeted after the results of the Assembly polls were announced. Party’s State president Dilip Ghosh said six persons, including five party supporters, have been killed in the past 24 hours.

“If is most unfortunate that a time when the COVID-19 crisis is at its peak, there is post election violence in the State. Not even 24 hours have passed, and several people have been killed and thousands of shops and houses vandalised,” he stated. Reports of post poll violence were coming both from north and south Bengal and almost from every constituency, he alleged.

Besides, the houses and vehicles of some BJP candidates were attacked and a party office at Arambagh was set ablaze.

The vehicle of Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated the TMC Supremo in Nandigram, was also attacked. The BJP has accused the Trinamool workers of the violence, but the ruling party leaders denied any connection with the incidents and urged people to maintain peace and follow COVID-19 protocols.

The Home Ministry in a letter to the West Bengal Chief Secretary has asked him to submit a detailed report on the violence that broke out in parts of the state on Sunday evening even as trends and results from the Assembly election were pouring in.

“MHA has asked West Bengal Government for a report on the post election violence targeting opposition political workers in the state,” the Home Ministry Spokesperson tweeted.

JP Nadda to take stock of the situation:

BJP national president J P Nadda will make a two-day visit to Bengal starting Tuesday to take stock.

The BJP said that it will hold a nationwide dharna against the violence on May 5, the same day Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to take oath as chief minister for the third time. Party president JP Nadda will visit the state on Tuesday to meet workers.

TMC rejected the charges and Banerjee appealed for peace across the state.
