Six suffocate to death in massive fire at high-rise commercial complex in Hyderabad

Six suffocate to death: Six people died after a massive fire broke out in a multi-storey commercial complex in Hyderabad. The deceased included four women. Fire service personnel rescued seven others.

The victims were all in their 20s. They succumbed at Gandhi Hospital. They hailed from Warangal, Mahabubabad, and Khammam districts. Reports said they were employees of a company operating out of the building.

Fire broke out on the 5th floor

Giving information, Hyderabad district collector Amoy Kumar said the fire broke out on the 5th floor of the Swapnalok Complex at 7.30 pm due to a short circuit. There were 13 people trapped inside. While 7 were rescued safely, 6 succumbed due to suffocation.

North Zone DCP Chandana Deepthi said, “Six people have died so far, including four girls and two boys. These people were inside when the fire broke out. By the time they were taken out, they were critical and were declared dead in the hospital. We’ve also rescued 7 people,”.

Ten fire enders rushed to the spot on getting information and battled for four hours before they controlled the fire.  The fire started from the third floor of Swapnalok Complex and spread to the upper floors of the eight-storey building, which houses offices.

Officials said the rescue work was still on as the smoke has not yet cleared.

Panic in the area

The upper storeys were engulfed in flames, causing panic among people in the area. Police vacated residents staying in adjoining buildings.

According to locals, the fire broke out between 7.30 and 8 p.m. The cause of the fire was not known.

State minister T. Srinivas Yadav rushed to the spot and monitored rescue and relief work.

This is the second major fire accident in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad, in less than two months.

On January 28 three persons died in a fire at a multi-storey commercial complex. The building was completely gutted in the fire and it was later demolished by the authorities as the structure had become weak.

Meanwhile, Union minister G Kishan Reddy expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in the accident.

Taking to Twitter, Union minister G Kishan Reddy wrote, “Deeply anguished by the loss of lives of 6 people in the fire accident at Swapnalok Complex in Secunderabad. My condolences to the bereaved families & prayers for the early recovery of those injured.” (sic)
