Skeletal remains of missing RTI activist found in Chhattisgarh

In Chhattisgarh’s Kabirdham district, the police have arrested the sarpanch of a gram panchayat and his three associates. In fact, last month the burnt skeleton of the missing RTI activist was found in the forest. The police have arrested four people, including the sarpanch, for the murder of the RTI activist.

RTI activist Vivek Choubey also worked as a local journalist. Vivek went missing on November 12 and did not return home. Subsequently, his family members lodged a missing complaint at the local police station in Kabirdham district on 16 November and an investigation was launched.

Vivek Choubey was missing for 41 days

Police said that Vivek Choubey was missing for the last 41 days. Police officials received a tip-off and recovered the fully charred skeletal remains in the forest near Kundapani. A forensic examination revealed that the charred skeleton was that of Vivek Choubey. Superintendent of Police of Kabirdham district Lal Umed Singh confirmed this.

During investigation, police found that Vivek Choubey’s phone was traced near his village and he was last seen going to Kundapani village to meet Sarpanch Amit Yadav. During interrogation, the sarpanch and his three accomplices confessed to the murder, following which they were arrested on Friday, the police officer said.

Stabbed to death after a dispute

According to the SP, the accused sarpanch told during interrogation that Vivek Choubey was with him till late night of 12 November. An argument broke out between them over a financial dispute. There was an argument between the two, after which the sarpanch killed the RTI activist by hitting him on the head with a stick.

SP Singh said, “After the incident, the four accused took the body to the forest and burnt it. They also broke the victim’s motorcycle into three parts and buried it in the forest and kept his mobile phone with them.”

The senior officer said that they tried to mislead the police by making calls from different places from Choubey’s phone to make it appear that he was alive.

The accused also buried Vivek Choubey’s motorcycle to hide the crime. Police officials have registered the case and further action is being taken.
