The Delhi High Court has refused to grant interim relief to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, ruling that he will continue receiving treatment at the government-run Safdarjung Hospital for now. The decision came during a special court hearing on a petition filed by his wife, Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, seeking his transfer to a private hospital.

The court observed that the authorities’ decision to shift Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital was not arbitrary, considering his deteriorating health after an extended hunger strike. Justice Mini Pushkarna stated that no interim order was required at this stage and directed the government to submit a fresh medical status report before the next hearing.
Wife Sought Transfer to Private Hospital
Wangchuk’s wife argued that he should be allowed to receive treatment at a private medical facility of his choice, claiming that his continued stay in a government hospital was against his wishes. Her legal team informed the court that they would challenge the order before a larger bench and seek an urgent hearing.
Government Defends Hospitalisation
The Centre maintained that Wangchuk’s health condition required immediate medical supervision and that shifting him to Safdarjung Hospital was necessary. According to the government, the activist’s vital signs were being closely monitored and his family had regular access to him while he remained under medical observation.
Health Concerns After Hunger Strike
Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike, prompting concerns over dehydration and other health complications. Medical experts recommended continued monitoring in a hospital setting to ensure timely treatment if his condition worsens.
