6. China: Three years of stringent restrictions devolves into chaos and brings healthcare system to a standstill

China abruptly and unexpectedly abandoned its strict "zero-COVID" policy on December 13, and nearly two weeks later, on December 20, the nation formally disclosed just over 3,000 COVID-19 cases. In an internal conference, the National Health Commission (NHC) concluded that there were actually closer to 37 million cases that day. According to notes from an internal meeting that were later leaked, the commission estimated that China had seen about 250 million COVID cases in the first 20 days of December. This is a remarkable rate of spread for a population with low immunity that had been protected from COVID for three years by a policy that kept China cut off from the rest of the world, which by that point had learned to live with the virus.

6. President Joe Biden: United States will start deporting illegal border crossers from Mexico who are from Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua right away

President of the United States Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the country would start immediately turning away Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans who enter the country illegally through Mexico. This is his most audacious move to date to address the surge in migrant arrivals that has occurred since he took office two years ago. The new regulations build on an ongoing initiative to thwart Venezuelans trying to enter the country, which was launched in October and resulted in a sharp decline of Venezuelans approaching the southern border. Together, they mark a significant shift in immigration policies that will endure even if the Supreme Court strikes down a public health regulation from the Trump administration that permits American officials to turn away asylum claimants.
