Derek O'Brien of the Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha has been barred from taking part in the remainder of the winter session of parliament due to his "gross misconduct" and "defying the Chair" during the Thursday morning's proceedings. The winter session will continue through December 22.

Upper House Decision

A motion to suspend the Trinamool member has been approved by the Upper House of Parliament. Piyush Goyal, the leader of the House, was given permission to make a motion by the chairman accusing O'Brien of disobeying his orders and interfering with the House's business. O'Brien was suspended from the House for the duration of the session after the motion was approved by voice vote, according to the chairman.

Security Breach Fallout

In response to the security breach incident, where two men leaped from the visitors' gallery into the Lok Sabha and burst yellow smoke canisters, O'Brien had demanded a discussion. Soon after, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar named the Trinamool MP and requested that he leave the House.

O'Brien and Opposition Members Defy Chair's Warning

O'Brien and a few other opposition members persisted in their protest despite the Chair's warning, demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah appear in the House to answer for yesterday's security breach incident. Speaking outside of the legislative Dola Sen, a Trinamool MP, also called for action against Pratap Simha, a BJP MP, who she claimed had assisted the accused Manoranjan in obtaining a Parliament visitor pass. "Why is the Ethics committee is quiet on this? Pratap Simha who is a BJP MP, why is he not being expelled? We seriously want to know if the security of parliamentarians is compromised then what will happen to the people of the county? Home minister did not even give a statement on this. TMC needs a proper investigation" Dola Sen said.

Security Personnel Suspended

Eight security personnel were suspended by the Lok Sabha secretariat on Thursday due to security lapses that resulted in a significant security breach in Parliament on Wednesday. On the anniversary of the terror attack on Parliament in 2001, there was a security breach. During Zero Hour, two individuals—Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D—jumped from the public gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber, let loose yellow petrol canisters and yelled slogans before being overpowered by the MPs.

Parliament Meeting on Security Breach Aftermath

Regarding the security breech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with senior ministers inside the Parliament today. While the leaders of the opposition are requesting statements be made in both houses. A significant shift in security was observed on Thursday at the Parliament, as guards stationed at the outer gates demanded that everyone take off their shoes even though they were closely inspecting everyone entering the campus.

Parliament Adopts Shoe Opening in New Measures

The new security setup resembles the airport's, where shoes—especially long boots or some leather ones—are requested to be opened during the security check. The only people permitted entry into the Parliament building from Makar Dwar are MPs, and everyone entering the building is subject to a rigorous security check. The Ministry of Home Affairs states that the inquiry committee will look into what caused the security breach in Parliament, find any shortcomings, and suggest additional measures. "The Committee will submit its report with recommendations, including suggestions on improving security in Parliament, at the earliest," according to the MHA.
