UNSC: India ready to assume leadership at Global High Table

UNSC: India has been a strong votary of reforms at United Nations. During a media interaction on Friday, India’s Permanent Representative, to the UN Ruchira Kamboj stated that India is set to assume the Presidency of UN Security Council and G – 20 and is eager to provide human-centric solutions to the world which is still recovering from economic slowdown and strife.

She further stated that India has always been a strong proponent of long-standing reforms at UN Security Council and opined that India deserves to be its permanent member. She also informed that for the last two decades there have been proposals mooted to restructure the UN Security Council, but have hit a stalemate at UN General Assembly.
There has also been lot of calls made by world leaders for comprehensive UNSC reforms, but nothing has changed.

Long Standing demand from India for far reaching reforms at United Nations

Furthermore, she also stated that India has been a prominent voice asking for reforms at the UN to make it more representative, inclusive and transparent. Despite support by leading nations on India’s demand for long standing reforms at the UN at present “the UN is far from “reflective of the true diversity” of its wider representative.

She also stated that India has assumed the Presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of December on Thursday and stated that in the last two years since becoming a member of the UN Security Council it has reached out to each and every voice in the council and has ensure that it speaks in the same voice on a variety on variety of Global issues.

India playing the role of a consensus builder at UN Security Council

Additionally, Ms. Kamboj stated that during India’s Presidency, there will be an emphasis on reforming multilateralism and forging an agreement on international counterterrorism strategies.

She also mentioned that on December 14 and 15, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will speak at two high-level signing ceremonies to discuss the UNSC Presidency’s schedule in further detail.
