UP Board’s Controversial Move! Biographies of 50 Great Leaders in Syllabus, But no mention of Nehru

UP Board: The U.P. Board will begin teaching its pupils about the lives and times of 50 great leaders of India starting in the new session in July. The Board’s curriculum includes biographies of 50 notable individuals, including Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, however, was overlooked.

Nehru’s Omission Justified Due to Sacrifice Criteria

Gulab Devi, the secondary education minister (independent charge), said that ‘Nehru had not offered the ultimate sacrifice for the nation in defence of the choice to omit him.’ As a result, she claimed, ‘Nehru was left off the list of 50 great men’s bios.’ When asked about including Savarkar, the minister responded, “What do we teach them if we don’t teach students about our great leaders like Savarkar and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay? Are we expected to educate our children on terrorism rather than the lives and times of important Indian figures? biographies of Bharat Ratna Mahamana and Mahavir Swami Students will also learn about Madan Mohan Malviya, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sarojini Naidu, and Nana Saheb. ‘All students must take this topic, and passing it is required. However, the grades won’t be recorded on the marksheet for the high school and intermediate exams,’ according to UP Board secretary Dibyakant Shukla. The Bharatiya Janata Party pledged to integrate the biographies of great individuals and freedom fighters into the curricula in their Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra, which was made public in preparation for the 2022 Legislative Assembly elections.

UP Board Unveils Consensus on Great Individuals

The UP Board had been doing the exercise for a while. An official who wished to remain anonymous claimed that the identities of the great individuals had finally come to a consensus. In class 9, students will study the life story of Chandrashekhar Azad, Birsa Munda, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Veer Kunwar Singh, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Gautam Buddha, Vinoba Bhave, Jyotiba Phule, Srinivasa Ramanujan and Jagadish Chandra Bose. Students in class 10 will study the lives of Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Tilak, Mangal Pandey, Roshan Singh, Sukhdev, and Khudi Ram Bose. Students of class 11 will study about Ram Prasad Bismal, Bhagat Singh, Bhimrao Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, Arvind Ghosh, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sarojini Naidu, Maharishi Patanjali, Mahabir Jain, surgeon Sushruta, Nana Saheb and Homi Jehangir Bhabha. In class 12, students would study the life stories of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, Rajguru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rabindranath Tagore, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Maharana Pratap, Adi Shankaracharya, Guru Nanak Dev, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, APJ Abdul Kalam, Ramanujacharya, Panini, Aryabhatta and CV Raman.
