Uttar Pradesh: Smriti Irani targets Rahul Gandhi after Congress leader’s shocking mysoginistic remark

Uttar Pradesh: Smriti Irani, a Union Minister, responded to a Congress leader’s “latkas” and “jhatkas” remark with a scathing attack on the organisation and Rahul Gandhi, whose potential candidature in Amethi had sparked the controversy.
Ms. Irani replied on Twitter and mentioned Mr. Gandhi. “Heard one of your provincial leaders have announced in an indecent manner that you would contest from Amethi in 2024. So is it definite that you will contest from Amethi? You won’t run off to another seat? You won’t be afraid??? PS: You & Mummy ji need to get your mysoginistic goons a new speechwriter,” read an approximation of her Hindi tweet in English.

Who did Irani referred to?

She was referring to Ajai Rai, the head of the UP Congress. According to Ajai Rai, Ms. Irani, who presently serves as the Lok Sabha representative for Amethi, only visits the area to display her “latkas” and “jhatkas” (a derogatory term for dance routines).

When asked if he would try to retake Amethi, Mr. Gandhi had initially responded in the positive.
“Amethi has served as the Gandhi family’s home. Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi have all served as Lok Sabha MPs from that region, according to Ajai Rai.

“Most of the factories in Amethi are on the verge of closure. Half of the factories in Jagdishpur industrial area are lying shut. Smriti Irani only comes, shows ‘latka-jhatka’, and leaves,” he further said.

BJP’s response to the comment

The BJP had responded angrily, calling the comment “shameful” for a party that had produced the nation’s first female prime minister and had long served as its leader.

“The language used by the Congress has always been anti-women. It shows the culture and mindset of the Congress. And a party, which has given a woman prime minister to the nation, and which was headed by a woman president for a long time, such statements from its leader, is definitely shameful,” Anand Dubey, a BJP spokesperson in UP, said.

Mr. Rai’s comment and the BJP attacks have not elicited a response from the Congress. Gandhi is currently heading his Bharat Jodo Yatra through Rajasthan.
