Indian Railways is set to launch its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train in Jammu & Kashmir, with trial runs recently completed on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK)-Srinagar route. Designed to withstand extreme cold, the train is poised to enhance connectivity and winter travel in the region. A potential route extension to Budgam is under consideration, awaiting final approval from the Railway Board.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Route Expansion to Enhance Jammu-Kashmir Connectivity
Initially planned to run between Katra, a key pilgrimage hub for Vaishno Devi devotees, and Srinagar, the Railway Board is now considering extending the route to Budgam. A senior Northern Railway official told ETNOW.in that post-trial assessments indicate the feasibility of the Katra-Budgam stretch. The 202-km route includes 20 stations, such as Reasi, Banihal, Qazigund, Anantnag, and Srinagar. During trials, the train’s performance on steep gradients and icy tracks was thoroughly tested, with officials describing the results as highly promising.
Key Features of Jammu and Kashmir's Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
Designed specifically for the cold climate of Jammu and Kashmir, this Vande Bharat train boasts several unique features. It can operate seamlessly in temperatures as low as -20°C. The driver’s cabin is equipped with a heated windshield to prevent fogging and freezing, ensuring clear visibility during harsh winters.
To ensure passenger comfort, the train has advanced heating systems, including in its plumbing and bio-toilets. These measures prevent water from freezing, allowing uninterrupted services even during extreme weather.
Once the extension to the Katra-Budgam route is approved, it will significantly enhance travel for pilgrims, tourists, and locals. The train will offer a safe, warm, and efficient alternative to road transport. With the Railway Board's decision still pending, all eyes are on this winter-ready marvel, which promises to redefine rail travel in one of India’s toughest terrains.
