Vijay Diwas, observed on December 16 every year, commemorates one of the most significant moments in India's military history—the victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. This war not only led to the liberation of Bangladesh but also marked the largest military surrender since World War II, with over 90,000 Pakistani troops laying down their arms. The victory, achieved in just 13 days, was a turning point in South Asian geopolitics and solidified India’s standing as a dominant regional force. As India celebrates Vijay Diwas 2024, leaders including PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have paid heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Vijay Diwas: Remembering India’s Triumph in the 1971 War

The 1971 Indo-Pak war, which culminated in the creation of Bangladesh, was a defining moment in India's history. The war began on December 3, 1971, after Pakistani forces launched a brutal crackdown on East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The civilians of East Pakistan were subjected to unimaginable violence, which led to an outpouring of support for their independence. India, under the leadership of Indira Gandhi, came to their aid and joined forces with the Mukti Bahini (Bangladeshi freedom fighters) to fight against Pakistan.

By December 16, 1971, the conflict came to a historic end with the surrender of Pakistani General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi and over 90,000 of his soldiers. This event, one of the largest military surrenders in history, symbolised the strength and resolve of the Indian and Bangladeshi forces. The victory was not without cost, though, as over 3,900 Indian soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. But the war's conclusion marked the beginning of Bangladesh’s independence and the solidification of India’s role as a regional power.
