Weather Update: IMD forecasts severe rainfall over east-central India for next 3 days

Weather Update: Several regions of eastern and central India are expected to receive severe rain in the coming days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a Low Pressure Area exists over the Northeast Bay of Bengal and its surroundings and is expected to intensify into a Depression by August 19 morning. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over east-central India over the next three days.

Meanwhile, light rain is expected to fall over the southern areas of the Peninsula over the next five days. The western end of the monsoon trough is forecast to migrate to the north of the normal position from August 19 and remain there for the next two to three days, while the eastern end is expected to be along or south of the normal position over the same time period.

“Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Odisha during 18th-20th; Gangetic West Bengal on 18th & 19th; Jharkhand on 19th & 20th; Vidarbha on 20th & 21st; Chhattisgarh & East Madhya Pradesh during 19th-21st and over West Madhya Pradesh during 20th-22nd August, 2022”, said IMD in its weather bulletin.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted to fall over West Bengal and Sikkim on August 19, over Vidarbha, Jharkhand and Odisha on August 20, over East Madhya Pradesh on August 21 and over west Madhya Pradesh on August 22. Meanwhile, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected over north Odisha on August 19, over north Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh on August 20 and over west Madhya Pradesh on August 21.

“Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over West Rajasthan & Gujarat State on 18th & 22nd; East Rajasthan and Konkan & Goa during 20th 22nd and over ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on 21st & 22nd August, 2022”, said Meteorological Department. Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over east Rajasthan on August 21 and 22.

Heavy rainfall is also forecasted over the Northwestern Himalayan region and northern plains. The weather agency said, “Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab on 20th; Uttarakhand on 19th & 20th; Himachal Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh during 19th-21st; south Haryana on 21st and over East Uttar Pradesh on 19th & 20th August, 2022.”

Northeastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland are expected to experience isolated rains with thunderstorms or lightning through August 20.
