Weather Update: IMD predicts heavy rainfall over east-central India

Weather Update: Several parts of India will experience extreme rainfall in the coming few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a new spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall over east-central India from the night of August 18. Meanwhile, the current torrential rainfall over Gujarat and south Rajasthan is expected to subside in the coming days. Subdued rainfall is forecasted to continue throughout the southern sections of the Peninsula for the next three to four days, with the exception of Tamil Nadu, where isolated heavy rainfall is expected until August 19.

The western end of the monsoon trough is south of its normal position, and it is expected to stay that way for the next two days. It is likely to gradually move northwards after that. The end of the monsoon trough is near its normal position.

The weather agency forecasted heavy rain in the country’s west. “Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Saurashtra & Kutch on 17th & 18th and over Konkan & Goa on 17th, 20th & 21st August, 2022”, the MeT Department stated in its weather bulletin.

Fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall is predicted to occur over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh till August 21 as a result of the likely establishment of a Low-Pressure Area over North Bay of Bengal around August 19.

The meteorological department said, “Isolated heavy rainfall with and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Gangetic West Bengal on 18th & 19th; Odisha during 18th-20th; Jharkhand on 19th & 20th; East Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh during 19th 21st; Vidarbha on 20th & 21st and over West Madhya Pradesh on 21st August, 2022.”

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on August 20 and21, as well as over Vidarbha on August 21 and Odisha on August 19 and 20.

Heavy rain is expected in the west Himalayas and parts of Uttar Pradesh. “Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Uttarakhand during 18th-20th; Himachal Pradesh during 19th-21st and over East Uttar Pradesh on 19th & 20th August, 2022.”

Northeastern states are forecasted to receive heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lighting during the next few days. “Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on 19th; Assam & Meghalaya during 19th-21st and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 18th-21st August, 2022”, said weather department.

Rainfall is also predicted over Tamil Nadu, Karaikal and Puducherry on August 18.
