Weather Updates: 2 Dead and 1 Injured Amidst Severe Monsoon in Maharashtra

Weather Updates: Two people drowned and one was injured after a portion of a house collapsed after heavy rains in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. An official from the district administration said that at least 32 houses were destroyed in Palghar due to the severe rainfall.

The district received an average 89.27 mm downpour in a day, ending at 10 am on Thursday. One area even received a maximum of 135 mm of rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert on Thursday in parts of Maharashtra, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, and Kolhapur. Mumbai is on orange alert until July 10.

In order to ensure the safety of people from the torrential monsoon, a team of National Disaster Response Force personnel from Pune arrived in Palghar on Wednesday, district disaster cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said.

“We also have with us cutting tools to rescue people from buildings, life detector equipments, chemical suits, masks in case of chemical hazards, and other equipments. We will be stationed in Manor for at least a month or till further orders,” said Inspector Arakhita Jena, who is leading the operations.

The victims of the floods include 51-year-old Ramesh Janya Goshe, from Charoti in the Palghar district.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a decomposed body identified later as Rahul Vishwakarma, was found in a swollen drain in the Madhuban locality of Vasai township in Maharashtra.

A police official said they suspect that the deceased worked in a local factory and might have slipped into the drain amid the heavy showers and got washed away.

According to reports, a portion of a house also collapsed at Vasuri in Vikramgad on Thursday, injuring the owner, 60-year-old Krishna Bhauji Bhoye. He has been hospitalised and is said to be stable, officials said.
