With masks, hand-sanitizers; Here’s how India is gearing up for its 74th Independence Day celebrations

India is all set to celebrate its 74th Independence Day on 15th August i.e. tomorrow. To commemorate the day, like every other year, the necessary preparation have already begun a while ago. However, unlike every other year, the Independence Day this year will have a different mood as nation continues its battle against covid-19 pandemic.

Owing to the coronavirus outbreak, there will be no social gatherings as all the state government offices have been advised to webcast their celebration.

The Red Fort, where the flag is hoisted every year, will also paint a different picture than the ideal in the wake of the pandemic. There will be no school children, no gatherings and no grand performance by the military band as well. Even the list of guests have also been cut short from the usual in lieu of the precautions.

As per the media reports, over 4,000 people including diplomats, officials and media personnel will be host to the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort.

According to the Defence Ministry, the organisation of the event have been maintained keeping in mind the covid-19 protocols. It said the seating arrangement has also been made under the guiding principle of Do Gaz Ki Doori between two guests.

“With an eye on safety, NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets have been invited to witness the event (instead of young school children) and they will be seated at Gyanpath,” it noted.

All invites will be donning masks and a handful of masks will also be kept at the venue for distribution.

“Similarly, availability of hand sanitizers at pre-defined locations has been done. Display boards are placed discreetly to attract the attention of invitees,” the ministry said.

“Most of the parking areas have been brick lined and paved in order to ensure smooth entry and exit of vehicles to the maximum feasible extent,” it added.

Talking about the precautionary measures, the ministry said, “Adequate medical booths at four locations, one near the Rampart, one in Madhavdas Park and two in 15 August Park have been set up to cater to any attendee who is detected having any symptoms related to COVID-19 during entry.” Ambulances would also be stationed at these four locations, it added.

Meanwhile, the members of the guard of honour have been under quarantine ahead of the event.
