“Your terrorist vs My terrorist!” India demands accountability from states safeguarding terrorism such as Pakistan

New Delhi: India has expressed worry about classifying acts of terrorism according to the motivations behind them. This strategy has been termed “dangerous” by the Indian government, which further emphasised that all terrorist actions should be condemned regardless of whether they are driven by biases towards Muslims, Sikhs, Buddists, or Hindus.

What did India Ambassador say?

India’s ambassador to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, highlighted the significance of the international community being vigilant against new terminology and misleading priorities that may undermine the fight against terrorism. She affirmed that instead of becoming diverted by misleading narratives or divisive agendas, it is imperative to remain focused on the actual threat posed by terrorism and work together to combat it.

She stated, “The tendency of categorisation of terrorism based on the motivations behind terrorist acts is dangerous and goes against the accepted principles that ‘terrorism in all its forms and manifestations should be condemned and there cannot be any justification for any act of terrorism, whatsoever.”

She continued further by saying, “will only take us back to the pre-9/11 era of labelling terrorists as ‘Your Terrorists’ and ‘My Terrorists’ and erase the collective gains the international community has made over the last two decades.”

India demands for accountability

India has highlighted the necessity of making states who give terrorists a safe haven accountable for their actions. This statement, which seems to make reference to Pakistan, emphasises the significance of international cooperation in the battle against terrorism.

India views the UN’s Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy as a “unique global instrument” that may strengthen local, regional, and global counterterrorism operations. In 2006, all UN member nations adopted unanimously the policy, making it the first time a single strategic and operational strategy to combat terrorism to be implemented.
