FDA approves self testing kit for covid-19 diagnosis at home

The US Food and Drug Administration(FDA) on Tuesday allowed an emergency authorization of the first covid-19 self-testing kit which can provide rapid results within 30 minutes.

In a statement on Tuesday, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health said that the latest development has been made with the view of “a significant step toward FDA’S nationwide response to covid-19”.

The move will enhance the number of testing in a lesser amount of time amid the surge in coronavirus cases in the United States.

The new test uses self-collected nasal swab samples which is authorized for people aged 14 or above, while for people below 13 will need assistance from health care provider.

DA Commissioner Stephen Hahn outlined in a statement that while COVID-19 diagnostic tests have been authorized for at-home collection, fully self-administered and provide results at home is a first in the country.

“This new testing option is an important diagnostic advancement to address the pandemic and reduce the public burden of disease transmission,” he said.

“The test works by swirling the self-collected sample swab in a vial that is then placed in the test unit,” the FDA said in a statement

“In 30 minutes or less, the results can be read directly from the test unit’s light-up display that shows whether a person is positive or negative for the SARS-CoV-2,” the virus that causes COVID-19, the FDA added.

It is noteworthy that rapid tests have low accuracy rate in general. Meanwhile, the FDA has not addressed the issue, however, in a letter to Lucira Health, it did mention that “it is reasonable to believe that you product may be effective in diagnosing covid-19.

Twitter has introduced a new feature called “Fleets” which will appear at the top of your Twitter account, right below the icon. The new feature will facilitate people to share their personal thoughts for a short period of time which they don’t want on their profiles in the longer run.

The fleet-like feature is not new to the world of social media. On Facebook and Instagram, the feature has been widely used as ‘Story’ which also appears on the top of the profile and disappears after a period of 24-hour.

The feature was tested in India, Italy, South Korea and Brazil on Tuesday, and was rolled out gloablly on Wednesday.

The design director of the micro-blogging in a press conference said the feature is introduced to make people more comfortable and active on the platform.

“We’ve seen Fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings,” Joshua Harris, Twitter’s Director of Design said during a press conference. He is also talking about unveiling a new feature called Audio Spaces, which will help users in hosting discussions on the platform. The feature will be tested first and then released.

“A lot of people don’t tweet. With retweets and replies, it feels like a burden to tweet. People lurk draft tweets and then do not send them. Fleets create a lower pressure way to join the conversation. It’ll make people more comfortable to join the conversation, because it’s just for a day, and it won’t be around forever. We’ve also seen more people joining conversations on Twitter, and we’ve seen that people new to Twitter are more comfortable,” Harris said during the press conference.

Fleets can not be shared further with users once disappeared. However, if you want to save them, you can always take screenshots. As the feature has been rolled out to share personal thoughts, they cannot be shared, liked or being commented at. People can respond to them, but the replies will only be visible to original tweeter as direct messages.

Talking about Fleets, Sam Haveson, product manager, in a blog post said that fleets are a “lower pressure” way to communicate “fleeting thoughts” unlike the permanent tweets which are available for public response.

RBI takes action on Lakshmi Vilas Bank, customers can withdraw up to Rs 25 thousand only

The Reserve Bank has said that DBIL will generate additional capital of Rs 2,500 crore from the merger. DBIL is a subsidiary of DBS Bank Limited Singapore. The balance sheet of DBIL is quite strong. It had a capital of Rs 7,109 crore as on 30 June 2020. GNPAs and NNPAs were 2.7% and 0.5% respectively.

“Combined balance sheet of DBIL will also remain strong after the proposed merger due to good level of capital,” RBI said. Covid-19 update: India records 38,617 cases, 449 deaths in last 24-hour

India reported  38,617 covid-19 cases in last 24-hour, pushing country’s total to 88,74,291. The death toll have mounted to 1,30,519 with 449 new deaths. As of now, there are 4,53,401 active cases while 82,90,371 people have recuperated from the virus.

Maharashtra is the worst hit country by the pandemic with 85,363 covid-19 cases followed by Kerala and Delhi with 71,046 and 40,128 cases respectively.

In the past ten days, the country has seen a downward trend in daily cases and has reported below 50,000 cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 8,44,382 samples for COVID-19 were tested on November 16 while a total of 12,65,42,907 samples tested so far.

The Health Ministry said that covid-19 recovery has further improved to 93.27 per cent. For the 46th day straight, India’s number of recoveries surpassed the daily new additions.

*Jharkhand’s Covid-19 tally mounted to 1,06,491 as 261 more people tested positive for the infection, a health department official said on Wednesday. 

*Mizoram reports 37 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total cases here to 3,481, including 2,972 discharges and 5 deaths. Active cases stand at 504.

*Delhi reported nearly double the number of daily coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours in comparison to yesterday. The number of cases went up from 3,797 to 6,396 as the number of tests went up.

*Mumbai reported 541 new cases of Covid-19, pushing the tally of infected people in the metropolis to 2,70,654. 

*Talking about post-Covid era, PM Modi on Wednesday said that one of the areas that requires global attention is ensuring urban rejuvenation.

*There’ll be no lockdown but there can be local restrictions at some busy places, said Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain. Maximum tests are being conducted which we’ll further increase, he added.

*France became the first European country to record over two millions of confirmed Covid-19 cases, although pandemic has shown signs of slowing, said Health General Director Jerome Salomon.

*Noida administration deploys #COVID19 testing team to conduct random tests of commuters at Delhi-Noida Border Visuals from DND flyway at Delhi-Noida border(ANI).

* Iraq has reported 2,961 new Covid-19 cases, pushing the country’s tally to 5,24,503.

Meanwhile, the overall covid-19 cases crossed 55 million mark on Tuesday, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.3 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

“Phase 2 of Exercise Malabar 2020 will witness joint operations, centred around the Vikramaditya Carrier Battle Group of the Indian Navy and Nimitz Carrier Strike Group of the US Navy. The two carriers, along with other ships, submarine and aircraft of the participating navies, would be engaged in high-intensity naval operations over four days,” the release added.
