3 Upcoming Electric Vehicles: In recent years, the Indian market has become more receptive to electric vehicles (EV). The importance of a car’s safety ratings has increased recently, and many models have received results that are nearly perfect. We have created a list of upcoming electric cars in India (launches planned through the end of the year) that received 5-star ratings in crash tests performed by Euro NCAP while keeping these two things in mind.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

The premium electric vehicle from Hyundai, the Ioniq 5, is anticipated to arrive in India. The cost of the Hyundai EV, which will be sold through the completely built-up unit (CBU) route, is anticipated to be around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Ioniq 5 received five stars in both the adult and child occupant protection categories in the Euro NCAP crash tests. It received 33.8/38 for protecting adult occupants and 42.6/49 for protecting children.

• In the frontal offset test, the Ioniq 5’s passenger compartment remained “stable.” The evaluation revealed “good” protection for the driver’s and passenger’s femurs and knees. In the barrier test, the driver’s critical body areas received “good” protection, and the rear received at least “adequate” protection.

• Protection of all critical body areas was “good” or “adequate” in both the side barrier test and the more severe side pole impact. Testing on the front seats and head restraints revealed “good” whiplash injury protection in the event of a rear-end collision. Even those in the back seats were “good” at avoiding whiplash injuries.

• The AEB system and even the lane support system performed well in tests, among the safety assist features available on the Ioniq 5.

Atto 3 by BYD

The recently unveiled Atto 3 will be BYD’s second vehicle for private purchasers in India. Its launch is scheduled for December, but deliveries of the SUV, which are anticipated to cost Rs 30 lakh, will begin in January 2023. (ex-showroom).

BYD’s electric SUV underwent three evaluations during the Euro NCAP crash tests: front, lateral, and rear. It received five stars for occupant protection for both adults (34.7/38 points) and children (44/49 points).

• Most adult protection tests found that the Atto 3 provided “good” protection for the front passengers’ heads and legs, but only “adequate” protection in the other areas. The passenger area was described as “stable.” The driver’s chest cover was deemed “weak” in the side pole lateral impact test.

• The Atto 3 received high marks for providing protection for all crucial body areas of both the six- and ten-year-old child dummies in the frontal offset and side barrier impact tests. The only drawback is that it lacks integrated child-seat restraint systems and ISOFIX child seat anchorages in the middle rear seat.

• The majority of the Advanced Driver-Assist Systems (ADAS) that BYD has installed in the Atto 3 will also be available on the model made for India. According to the Euro NCAP tests, both the lane support system and the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system of this vehicle performed admirably. However, it lost points for having a speed assistance system and not having a driver fatigue detection feature. Overall, it performed admirably in this regard.

EQB Mercedes-Benz

The Mercedes-EQ EQB is anticipated to be the next luxury EV to enter the Indian market. With a starting price of Rs 50 lakh, we anticipate the automaker to introduce it in December 2022. (ex-showroom, if brought via the CKD route).

• According to Euro NCAP, Mercedes-electric Benz’s SUV breezed through its safety inspections, earning five stars for both adult and child occupant protection. The EQB scored 44.8 out of 49 points for child safety, compared to the former’s 36.4 out of 38. Of all the vehicles on this list, it has the highest safety rating.

• The frontal offset test demonstrated that the passenger compartment remained “stable.” The study’s findings showed that both the driver and passenger had “good” protection in all crucial body areas. With the exception of the driver’s neck, which showed “marginal” protection in the barrier test, protection of all critical body regions was “good” or “adequate.” Protection of all vital body areas during the side barrier test was “good.”

• Several safety assist features, such as auto-emergency braking (AEB) and forward collision warning, have been added by Mercedes to the EQB. Both the lane support system and the AEB system performed admirably during tests of their functionality at highway speeds.
