Delhi Metro Fare Hike: From August 25, 2025, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will raise fares for the first time in eight years. Millions of people depend on the Metro every day, so this change will have an effect on the budgets of normal commuters in Delhi-NCR.
Why is the fare going up now?
As a result of rising operational and maintenance costs, such as electricity, staff pay, and modernization costs, the DMRC had to raise fares. The last time fares were changed was in 2017, and prices have gone up a lot since then.
New structure for fares
The revised fare chart adds small price rises based on how far you travel. People traveling short distances will only have to deal with a small price increase, but people traveling longer distances may notice a big one.
- 0–2 km: Price stays the same at ₹10
- Prices for 2–5 km went up from ₹15 to ₹20.
- 5 to 12 km: From 20 rupees to 30 rupees
- 12–21 km: Price went up from 30 to 40 rupees
- Added ₹50 (from ₹40) for 21–32 km.
- Price went up from ₹50 to ₹60 for trips over 32 km.
The biggest change in monthly costs will be for people who travel every day on longer routes.
Effects on People Who Commute Every Day
The price increase will add up over time for people going to work from Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, or Ghaziabad. A person who usually takes two long trips a day could spend 600 to 1000 naira more per month than they did before.
Discount plans keep going
To make things easier for commuters, DMRC has stated that discounts for Smart Card holders will stay in place.
- 10% off during the week (off-peak hours)
- Weekends and holidays get a 20% discount
These incentives make it easier for people who travel a lot to pay without cash and urge them to do so.

Different people have different responses to the news. Some commuters understand why the price hike is needed because of inflation and practical problems, but others think it will put a strain on their monthly budgets, especially those who don’t have other ways to get to work.
The Government’s View
The Delhi Government agreed with the increase in fares, but they asked DMRC to make sure that the trains were safer, cleaner, and on time in exchange for the higher ticket prices. There are also talks going on about adding more daily and monthly passes to make travel cheaper.
