Inspirational Stories: The father of Ashok Khade was a cobbler. In the throbbing metropolis of Mumbai, he toiled away behind a tree. Against all difficulties, Ashok attended college and afterwards worked in the city's government-run shipyard. He created his own business after gaining the necessary expertise in offshore maintenance and construction, and it now employs 4,500 people and generates a revenue of Rs 500 crore annually.
Ashok Khade's Struggle Against Discrimination and Poverty
Ashok was born in the Sangli district of Maharashtra in the hamlet of Ped. They were a family of six children who had very little to eat and very little money to maintain themselves. They were Chamars, a dalit group whose customary occupation was to skin the corpses. His mother was forced to work as a farm labourer on the properties owned by upper caste landowners. His family experienced discrimination at every turn, from being socially rejected to being denied chances.
Ashok Khade's Journey in the Shipbuilding Industry
Eventually, his father made the decision to relocate to Mumbai and look for employment there. "My father worked as a cobbler in Mumbai. You can still find the tree he planted and plied his trade under near Chitra Talkies," Ashok told The Economic Times in an interview. Early in life, Ashok recognised the value of education.After completing class 10 in a variety of government schools, he moved to Mumbai to be with his father and older brother.By that time, his brother was employed as a welder at the government-run Mazgaon Dockyard, where ships are built.While continuing his undergraduate career, Ashok joined his brother as an apprentice. From 1975 through 1992, Ashok worked at the Mazgaon Dock, where he developed the contacts and expertise necessary to launch his own business. He had the opportunity to travel to Germany in 1983, and this opportunity planted the seeds of his future entrepreneurialism. Despite all of the difficulties, Ashok founded DAS Offshore in 1995 with his brothers Datta and Suresh. The company was given their initials.
DAS Offshore's Rise in the Oil Services Sector
The oil services sector was experiencing additional opportunities as a result of the economic liberalisation of 1991.After managing a few smaller subcontracts, their first significant project was given to them by Mazagon Dock, their previous employer. All of his supplies were purchased on credit from clients he had previously worked with. They began constructing and renovating offshore oil rigs, and their clientele quickly grew. They serve companies like ONGC, Essar, Hyundai, and others, according to NDTV. DAS Offshore currently employs over 4,500 people and has a yearly revenue of Rs 500 crore.On his mother's request, Ashok also restored a temple in their hamlet that they were previously forbidden from visiting because of caste relations. He also intends to establish a hospital, a school, and an engineering college in his hamlet in the future.
